Threats continue: Trump plans to pull US out of WHO, Financial Times says

Washington, Dec 23 - Republican Donald Trump's transition team plans to end US membership in the World Health Organization (WHO) on the first day of the new administration, The Financial Times reports, citing experts familiar with the president-elect's environment.

The US is the largest donor to the UN agency, providing 16% of its funding for 2022-2023. Ending Washington's funding would seriously harm the WHO's ability to respond to health emergencies in various parts of the world, experts warn.

"The United States is going to leave a huge gap in funding and leadership of global health. I don't see anyone who is going to fill that gap," said Lawrence Gostin, a professor specializing in global health at Georgetown University.

The expert recognizes that the organization would have to "substantially reduce its scientific staff" and considers it unlikely that the European Union will be able to fill the financial gap, so China would end up increasing its influence.

During his previous presidential term, Trump initiated the US withdrawal from the WHO in 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic, accusing the agency of being controlled by Beijing. However, the following year Joe Biden suspended the process and restarted relations with the agency on the first day of his administration.

An expert cited by the media highlighted the "symbolism" of Trump seeking to reverse Biden's decision precisely on January 20, the day of his inauguration.

Trump's team did not directly comment on this potential withdrawal, but a person familiar with the plans told FT: "The same WHO that we left in the first administration? It seems that we would not care much about what they had to say." (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
