Could artificial intelligence replace humans on the battlefield?

China, Jan 3. - Artificial intelligence (AI) cannot replace human decision-making on the battlefield, because AI does not assume responsibility for its actions, warns the Chinese Army.

"AI must operate in tandem with human decision-makers to optimize command effectiveness, enhancing, but not replacing, human actions," says an article published in the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily, cited by the South China Morning Post.

As AI evolves, it must remain a tool guided by human judgment, ensuring that responsibility, creativity and strategic adaptability remain at the forefront of military decision-making, the outlet notes.

Since AI operates within predefined algorithmic limits and its responses often lack originality, human autonomy and creativity are indispensable on the battlefield, it adds.

The PLA notes that it prefers a structure in which machines analyze data, provide information and suggest possible actions. However, “final decisions remain with human commanders, which protects against errors arising from the black box nature of AI.”

The article adds that another weak point of the technology is its inability to reflect on its own actions or take responsibility for its decisions, unlike human commanders, who can refine their plans in response to circumstances. (Text and Photo Cubasí)
