Traces of a dinosaur highway discovered in the United Kingdom

A team of paleontologists discovered multiple huge dinosaur footprints dating back to the Middle Jurassic - about 166 million years ago - in the Dewars Farm quarry, located in Oxfordshire (United Kingdom), according to a statement published this Thursday by the University of Birmingham, who directed the excavation work.

The text details that among the findings, five extensive footprints stand out and, in addition, evidence of the existence of others in the surroundings. Likewise, it specifies that the longest continuous trail, among those found, measures more than 150 meters in length.

Four of them were made by gigantic long-necked herbivorous dinosaurs, the so-called sauropods, and probably from the genus Cetiosaurus, a cousin of the well-known Diplodocus, up to 18 meters in length. While the fifth footprint corresponds to a carnivorous theropod dinosaur, Megalosaurus, which had characteristic large three-fingered legs with claws on them.

"These tracks offer an extraordinary window into the lives of dinosaurs, revealing details about their movements, interactions and the tropical environment they inhabited," said Kirsty Edgar, Professor of Micropaleontology at the University of Birmingham. (Text and photo: RT)
