Cuba evokes guerrilla commander Camilo Cienfuegos

Havana, Feb 6. - Cuba today remembers guerrilla leader Camilo Cienfuegos, one of the most charismatic and heroic commanders of the Rebel Army, on the occasion of the 93rd anniversary of his birth.

Cienfuegos was the repository of the trust of the maximum leader of the last Cuban libertarian feat, Fidel Castro, and of the Argentine-Cuban commander Ernesto Che Guevara, for his temerity and sacrifices in the fights against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1958).

Of him, Fidel Castro once stated that The Lord of the Vanguard - the adjective with which Camilo is also remembered - loved difficulties, knew how to face them and was capable of performing feats in the most incredible circumstances.

Together with Commander Guevara, he led the liberating invasion from east to west of the island, and was the undisputed hero of the battle of Yaguajay, in the province of Sancti Spiritus.

Born in 1932, in the Havana neighborhood of Lawton, and physically disappeared on October 28, 1959, Camilo was one of the Granma Yacht expeditionaries and rose to commander of the Rebel Army in the eastern mountains ranges in the midst of the conflagration against the Batista army.

From a very early age he had stood out for his human sensitivity and rebellion against all manifestations of injustice.

He participated in popular protests, facing the Batista dictatorship, for which he was targeted by the repressive structures of the tyrant and forced to emigrate to the United States due to the persecution to which he was subjected, and also for economic reasons.

In his last speech, on October 26, 1959, in front of thousands of Cubans gathered in front of the former Presidential Palace, he made clear his position as the unwavering guardian of the Revolution, and his confidence in the people:

"...it doesn't matter what cunning and cowardly betrayals they may commit to this people and this Revolution, it doesn't matter that mercenary planes come manned by war criminals and protected by powerful interests of the North American Government, because here there is a people that does not allow itself to be confused by traitors," he stated.
