Las Vegas Farm: A Model of Agroecology and Food Safety in Camagüey


Camaguey, Apr 17th. - On the Las Vegas estate, belonging to the Cooperative of Credit and Services Armando Cardozo in the municipality of Guaimaro, the project of international cooperation Support for Food and Nutritional Security (CAPROCA) stands out as one of the most advanced in its execution.

In this enclave the couple formed by Alina Sifonte Díaz and Denis Vega Rojas share both the work of the countryside and those of the home, consolidating a productive management that respects the environment through more efficient cultivation methods.

Initiatives they have developed include the application of biobons, the implementation of polycultures and the adoption of silvopastoral systems. In addition, they have created innovation and learning networks that facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience among farmers.

These transformations are aimed at building resilience to climate change through an agro-ecological approach. Its productions include the manufacture of cassava flour, nice and banana, as well as the extraction of sesame oil.

They are also engaged in dehydrating basil and turmeric that they use as seasonings in food processing.

Among its objectives is oil support for kindergarten, schools, the family care system and nursing homes.

All this is part of the purpose of ensuring the sustainability of the productions on the 13.5 hectares of the Las Vegas estate, thus contributing to food and nutritional security through the CAPROCA project. (Text and photos: Zenia Donet García/Radio Agramonte Chain)
