Camagüey, May 28th. - A train covering the Holguín-La Habana route derailed on Tuesday shortly after 9:00 p.m. at kilometer 522.6 of the Central Railway Line, near the Mechanical Plant in Camagüey.
The incident resulted in the overturning of a van and the diversion of two cars, leaving several passengers with non-serious injuries.
According to Adalberto Giral Rodríguez, director general of the Empresa Ferrocarriles Centro-Este, the material damage was limited to the affected wagons, while the rest of the convoy could be towed to the central station of Camagüey to ensure continuity of travel.
Provincial authorities and representatives of mass organizations travelled to the site to coordinate assistance efforts.
Beatriz Rodríguez Fernández, Coordinator of Programs and Objectives of the Provincial Government, explained that the passengers of the cars were relocated in buses to the railway terminal.
At the Manuel Ascunce Domenech Provincial Hospital, 18 people were treated, none of them seriously injured.
The doctor on duty, Guillermo Brito Adán, Specialist in Integral General Medicine, confirmed that only one patient had a fracture of the patella, while the rest remain under observation without life risk.
