Cuban Government’s highest priority: electricity generation

Havana, May 29th. - Cuba's president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, said the government gives the highest priority to solving the problems related to electricity generation, in the most recent podcast Since the Presidency, published today on digital platforms.

The government is working today with a priority above all the infinite priorities that the socialist state has committed to the people, said the head of state at the beginning of the broadcast, in which he addressed questions from the population about the challenges of the sector.

Díaz-Canel stressed the importance of talking about this issue because the functioning of the National Electroenergy System depends on the functioning of our economy, which is hurt, diminished, almost paralyzed in many activities because it is unable to have the necessary service to attend to the economy and also serve the citizenry.

Accompanied by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy and the general director of the Electrical Union of Cuba, Alfredo López Valdés, the president explained that the May demand compared to March grew considerably, both in the afternoon and in the morning hours.

In this sense De la O Levy added that the recorded values have a particular impact on the difficult situation with liquefied gas, as well as non-compliances in the electricity consumption plans of several entities and high temperatures.

The provinces are adjusting to their already small consumption plan but Havana does have a significant non-compliance in the residential sector; and within the residential sector, the sector of non-state forms of management that fail to comply with and affect these consumption growths, the minister said.

During the podcast, the head of state denied false news that circulated on social networks, following the broadcast of the information program Mesa Redonda on the electroenergetic situation, referring to the deactivation of two thermoelectrics for 18 months, which would involve 72 consecutive hours of blackout and only four hours later, of electricity supply.

In this regard, the Director-General of the Electrical Union reiterated that the country is working to reduce blackouts from next July and under more control, as well as greater availability of fuel.

The Cuban president stressed that when the country is in a better situation it will have to systematically maintain thermoelectrics and carry out the necessary capital repairs so as not to fall back into this situation.

We - the president stressed - we are surrounded, persecuted, and also accused by the same people who encircle us and pursue every Cuban financial action, but we will not stop working to solve the problems that affect the people; and we will always be ready to answer as many doubts that arise because that is our duty.
