Cuba and the Inter-Parliamentary Union strengthen ties


Havana, May 30 – Cuba and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) strengthened their ties during a meeting held today by the president of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP, parliament), Esteban Lazo, and the head of that body, Martín Chungong.

The visitor, who is on an official visit to the island, was received at the legislative headquarters, where the parties signed a memorandum of understanding between the general secretariat of the ANPP and the IPU, according to television.

During the talks, Lazo highlighted the importance of the visit by the president of that body, which houses 181 national parliaments, and reaffirmed the will to continue strengthening mutual relations.

We recognize the important role of the institution you represent and appreciate the excellent relations between Cuba and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the president of the Council of State also emphasized.

He also expressed his gratitude for the multiregional organization's position, which, he recalled, annually reaffirms its rejection of the United States' economic, financial, and commercial blockade against the Caribbean country by sending a report to the UN Secretary-General.

For his part, Chungong conveyed a message of solidarity and support to the Cuban people, of whom he considered a friend, and expressed his willingness to continue raising the voice of the institution he represents in defense of the island's causes.
