Havana, June 3rd. - Cuba has so far secured 210 spots in 24 sports disciplines for the 2025 Asunción Junior Pan American Games, to be held from August 9 to 23. This number is expected to increase in the coming days, surpassing the 212 athletes who represented the country in the previous edition of Cali-Valle 2021.
According to José Antonio Miranda Carrera, Director General of High Performance at INDER , the current delegation is comprised of 104 male and 106 female athletes. In addition, an increase in athletics quotas is planned, as well as the request for additional spots in tennis for the concept of universality. Participation in weightlifting is yet to be determined, where the competition categories will be determined.
This sporting event will be key to assessing the future of the Cuban Olympic movement, especially in view of the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. Miranda emphasized that the event will also serve as qualification for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games, reinforcing its strategic importance.
Among the most notable athletes who will participate again are Carlos Daniel Ramos (gold in diving), Yonat David Véliz (champion in Greco-Roman wrestling), Greili Bencosme (silver in wrestling) and Geannis Garzón (bronze in freestyle wrestling).
At the last edition of Cali 2021, Cuba achieved a remarkable fifth place in the medal table, with 29 gold, 19 silver, and 22 bronze medals, behind only powerhouses such as Brazil, Colombia, the United States, and Mexico. (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
