Havana, Jun 18th. - The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today recalled the legacy of heroine Vilma Espín on the 18th anniversary of her physical departure.
We still feel it with us. Viilma remains an inspiration and challenge for Cuban women of any age and trade. Strong and tender, combative and innovative, continues to be at the forefront of women's fights for justice, the president wrote on the X social network.
Likewise, the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, recalled her role as strategist in the clandestine struggle, as a bold guerrilla, wife, mother, founder of the Federation of Cuban Women and defender of equality.
For his part, the Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba, Roberto Morales, evoked her with the commitment to continue to promote the advancement of women and preserve the Revolution to which she devoted her life.
Vilma Espín was a member of the 26th Movement of July and a prominent fighter of the armed struggle in the Sierra Maestra. Since the 1959 revolutionary triumph, it has been dedicated to the emancipation of Cuban women and promoted their empowermen and their contribution to the growth of the nation.
Espín died on June 18, 2007 and her remains rested in the Mausoleum of the Second Frank Country Eastern Front in Santiago de Cuba, the same province that saw her born. (Text and photo: PL)
