Guáimaro, Camagüey, June 26th - As part of the actions of the Laif Agroverde international collaboration project, aimed at strengthening agri-food programs in Camagüey, the first Ethnobotany Workshop was held in the municipality of Guáimaro.
The event, held at La Ilusión farm belonging to the José Manuel Brito Credit and Services Cooperative, brought together livestock producers, specialists from the Agroforestry Research Institute, and academics from the University of Camagüey.
During the meeting, knowledge was exchanged on the importance, uses, and functions of various timber and fruit species in agroforestry systems.
The workshop was based on an identification study carried out on farms in the province, which allowed for the recognition of the species with the greatest potential for livestock activity. Among these, the carob tree and the guásima stand out for their high prevalence.
Ethnobotany, the science that studies the relationships between communities and plants, was the central focus of the meeting.
This first workshop helped to raise awareness among producers about the importance of the Camagüey's tree flora and its application in silvopastoral systems. To date, more than 100 species have been identified on the farms evaluated.
The Laif Agroverde project, implemented in Camagüey since 2023, has as its main objectives to investigate and innovate, with the support of science, to transform food production systems in the region.
This initiative reinforces the commitment to sustainable development and agricultural diversification in the province. (Text and photos: Gleibis Gómez Durva/Radio Cadena Agramonte)
