Havana, July 14 – Authorities announced today that they are recovering capacity at the Supertanker Base in the western Cuban province of Matanzas, which was affected by a large-scale fire.
The digital media outlet Cubadebate added this Monday that, almost three years after the unfortunate fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, tangible progress has been made in recovering the 200,000 cubic meters of fuel storage capacity lost in August 2022.
The four tanks totally destroyed by the flames are gradually being replaced thanks to the collaboration between Cuba and China, forces that shape the 88, 49-1, 86 and 87 tanks, says Cubadebate, which is supported by local broadcasts from Yumurí TV.
The head of the Integrated Projects Directorate, industrial engineer Richard Daniel Martínez, indicated that in general the work is progressing.
The four containers have their shells and are currently in the mechanical finishing phase before moving on to painting, the expert stated.
Tank 88, manufactured by Cuban forces, is 60 percent complete, while the remaining three, with great progress, are being taken over by Chinese workers. The peculiarity is that they will not be side by side like the damaged ones, but will be located on the lower esplanade, and the other two on the upper one.
The Fuel Trading Company is the investor in a project that includes approximately two kilometers of perimeter fencing and seven kilometers of asphalt on the access roads to the tanks, built with greater distance between the two, in addition to incorporating a modern lightning rod system.
The work on this strategic site aims to transform the terminal and the entire industrial zone into a sufficiently robust economic sector, less vulnerable, and with a more modern image.
To this end, a major investment with a technological component was conceived, the primary objective of supporting operations with increased security as a key variable, the note concludes. (Text and photo: PL)
