Increased gas production in Cuba reflected

Havana, July 14 – The increase in gas production in Cuba adds capacity for electricity generation, a press report indicated today.

The newspaper Granma added this Monday that the stability of gas allows for the recovery of generation capacities, with an average contribution of around 200 megawatts to the National Electric System (SEN, for its acronym in Spanish).

The report reiterated that natural gas production contributes to the Energas Boca de Jaruco and Energas Puerto Escondido plants and is part of the strategy designed to increase the fuel's supply for electricity generation.

This production increased to approximately 2.5 million cubic meters so far in July.

This detail was confirmed to the publication by Reinier García, director of the production base business unit of the Western Oil and Gas Drilling Company.

The official stated that gas delivery this summer is significant compared to the same period last year.

He explained that the stability in the delivery allowed for the recovery of generation capacities equivalent, on a net average, to around 200 megawatts (MW) to the National Electric System.

He pointed out that, in order to maintain the continuous flow to the company Energas, operations control works are carried out on the wells located in the different fields.

In addition, he noted, work is underway on projects to drill new wells in the surrounding areas, and it is estimated that they will be in production by the end of September.

On the other hand, Lianet Suárez, the company's oil and gas extraction and collection specialist b, explained that from the facility, every four hours, the appropriate working regime in the fields is monitored to ensure that supplies are maintained.

She emphasized that the production of the Puerto Escondido field is essential for electricity generation, when they intend to guarantee all the technological characteristics of the plant so that, in this summer stage, there are fewer disruptions. A concrete result of this work is the contribution of the three plants located in Energas Boca de Jaruco, Puerto Escondido, and Varadero.

These facilities, together, generated 351 megawatts (MW) in early July. Despite not covering the current generation capacity deficits, this confirms a further step toward energy sovereignty, which also includes renewable energy sources.

Suárez noted that achieving increasingly cleaner production and replacing imports, guaranteeing crude oil and associated gas, is a priority for the company's workers, the note concluded. (Text and photo: PL)
