Camagüey, July 21.—On the Villa Luisa farm, located in the green belt of the Ciudad de los Tinajones (The City of the Earthenware Jars) and belonging to the Municipal Agro-industrial Company, fruit tree cultivation is being intensified on 12.48 hectares of land designated for that purpose.
David Hernández González, producer of the farm mentioned, commented that predominate seven thousand plants of guava, 1300 mango, 800 avocado and 160 red mamey plants.
He also specified that the mini-industry located there is conducting the first tests to process sausages with natural seasonings harvested in this place, including garlic, pepper and tomato paste.
Towards social consumption, Acopio and Frutas Selectas are mainly directed these productions and added that they also maintain the production of pickled cucumber and pepper.
Nine years ago, he said, he began farming these lands, where fruit plantations are interspersed with short- and medium-cycle crops with the goal of optimizing the soil, saving water and fertilizers, and achieving higher yields per area.
He added that it is necessary to seek productive strategies, which is why he explained that in his case, he prepares a product from tobacco waste and lime, which he uses to fumigate pests.
"I am one of those who believes that farms should be economically sustainable, so that harvests are achieved every day and workers can earn a salary," he noted. (Source: Facebook profile of the People's Power Government in Camagüey)
