Havana, July 22 – Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, today mourned the death of Pedro Medina Ayón, a baseball legend considered one of the greatest catchers of all time in the Largest of the Antilles.
In a message on X, the head of state sent condolences to the baseball fans and family of Medina, who died this Monday at the age of 73.
Díaz-Canel highlighted the prolific athletic career of the Industrialista "doctor," who, as a player, was a world, Pan American, and Central American champion, and as a manager also knew how to lead his team to victory.
"This gentleman of the catching position will be remembered as a legend both on and off the field," stated the president.

Pedro Medina is also known as the Hero of Edmonton, for his unforgettable home run during the Intercontinental Cup in that Canadian city, in 1981, which decided a memorable match, that for many specialists has been one of the most dramatic home runs connected in the international baseball.
