Ozzy Osbourne, heavy metal legend and iconic voice of Black Sabbath, dies

United Kingdom, July 23. - The rock world is in mourning. Ozzy Osbourne, iconic Black Sabbath vocalist and accomplished solo artist, passed away this Tuesday at the age of 76. His family confirmed the news in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Ozzy this morning. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.”

Osbourne, born in Birmingham (1948), revolutionized music with his unique style: from his time in Black Sabbath—a band founded in 1968 that fused blues and jazz with dark lyrics—to his successful solo career.

Albums like Paranoid (1970) and Blizzard of Ozz (1980) became pillars of metal. His eccentric image (black makeup, round glasses and transgressive attitude) and controversies such as biting a bat on stage (1981) crowned him as the “Prince of Darkness.”

Despite his battles against addictions and Parkinson’s (diagnosed in 2020), Osbourne never left music. In July 2024, he gave his last concert at Villa Park, Birmingham, sitting on a throne of bats due to his mobility problems. There, he reunited the original members of Black Sabbath for the first time in 19 years.

His legacy includes 13 solo albums (7 award-winning), controversies over alleged incitement to suicide—which he always denied—and his successful reality show, The Osbournes (2002–2005). Artists like Elton John (with whom he collaborated on Ordinary Man, 2020) and bands like Metallica recognized him as an unrepeatable influence. (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
