Havana, July 29. - Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba, and QU Dongyu, Director-General of the FAO, agreed today on the need to continue deepening ties of collaboration in order to face current global challenges.
The two officials met within the framework of the Second Assessment of the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS+4), which is taking place until Tuesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
According to the Cuban Embassy in that East African country, Tapia Fonseca expressed his gratitude for the FAO's historic and sustained cooperation with the island, particularly in key areas such as food security, sustainable agriculture, and national capacity building.
This Monday, speaking at the opening session of UNFSS+4, the Cuban Vice Prime Minister emphasized the urgency of increasing collaboration between countries, with an emphasis on issues such as the exchange of experiences in food security, sovereignty and self-sufficiency, nutrition and health, science and innovation, agroecology, agricultural extension, and adequate treatment of food loss and waste.
"The resources to eradicate hunger and transform food systems are available; all that's needed is political will and commitment to use them for the benefit of the people," he stated.
Tapia Fonseca leads the island's delegation to the event, which also includes Ambassador Vilma Thomas Ramírez, Director of Multilateral Political Affairs of the General Directorate of Multilateral Affairs, and Elizabeth Peña Turruellas, Director of Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture.
