Cubans commemorate the Day of the Martyrs of the Revolution on July 30th. The date was established with the revolutionary triumph to honor all those who fell for national sovereignty and in remembrance of the assassinations of Raúl Pujol and Frank País, the latter the leader of action and sabotage for the 26th of July Movement. The young men were captured as a result of a tip-off and brutally gunned down by Batista's repressive force in Santiago de Cuba, where the citizen resistance was gaining strength.
With the death of Frank País, the July 26 Movement not only lost its Chief of Action and Sabotage but also one of its most exceptional fighters whose integrity, intelligence and courage made him worthy of the admiration of all those around him. On July 31, 1957, during his funeral, there was a popular demonstration in Santiago de Cuba, his hometown, which boosted the insurrectional movement throughout Cuba.
Upon learning of the young man's death, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, called him "the most valuable, the most useful, the most extraordinary of our combatants." And he said: "What monsters! They have no idea of the intelligence, the character, the integrity they have murdered!"
The Day of the Martyrs of the Cuban Revolution epitomizes the perennial tribute of remembrance and respect to the more than 20,000 Cubans who lost their lives in the effort to overthrow the tyrant Fulgencio Batista, a continuation of those who launched themselves into the struggles for national liberation in 1868 and 1895.
