Guantánamo, August 1.- Starting today, Guantánamo becomes the epicenter of artistic and social debate with the 49th edition of the Political Song Days, the longest-running event organized by the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS, for its acronym in Spanish) in Cuba.
The event will fuse music, visual arts, and poetry in a tribute to revolutionary thought; while the current edition is dedicated to the promotion of the songwriter's song.
In that sense, it pays homage to two pillars of Cuban trova: Marta Valdés and Eduardo Sosa; in addition, it joins the commemorations for the 99th anniversary of the birth of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and evokes the legacy of Armando Hart Dávalos, on his 95th birthday.
Concerts will be the central focus of the event with the participation of artists such as Heidi Igualada, Ariel Díaz, and researcher Fidelito Díaz, among other guests who will enrich the program until August 4.
Roly Ávalos, representative of Oralitura Habana, will also attend the event and share his "décimas" (ten-line verses) in the "Siempre Jueves" (Always Thursday) space, a gathering that moves to this eastern stage, explained Dairon Martínez Tejeda, president of the AHS in Guantánamo.
He detailed that for four days the high eastern of Cuba will enjoy theatrical performances in José Martí Park, panels, Artex fairs, book sales and presentations, trova and poetry jams, and exhibitions such as "Hay todavía una canción" (There is Still a Song), dedicated to Valdés and Sosa.
The exhibition, scheduled for August 2, will showcase about thirty images that dialogue with their emblematic works, complemented by interactive audiovisuals that document their influence on young people such as Annie Garcés, he stated.
As part of its community outreach, the event will reach the Border Brigade and the municipalities of El Salvador - specifically the coffee-growing community of Palizada - Niceto Pérez, and Caimanera, said Martínez Tejeda.
It will also include artistic activities at the Benito Odio trova house, the Patio de Adela, and other spaces for exchange with the people.
The closing is planned with a pilgrimage to honor the martyrs of August 4, 1957, the date on which young revolutionaries lost their lives in an explosion in a clandestine house of the 26th of July Movement, located on Aguilera Street and Santa Rita corner.
As in each calendar year, the Political Song Days will combine tradition and contemporaneity; and will highlight, once again, its validity as a space for cultural resistance where art joins social commitment to sing to Cuba, its history, and its people. (Text and photo: ACN)
