Pension increase, well received by retirees

Havana, August 4th.- Although the partial increase in pensions as of September now covers one million 324 thousand 599 people, 79% of the beneficiaries, the measure opens up certain hopes for many retirees and pensioners due to disability and death of the spouse.

In the week that concludes -and in accordance with Law 105 on Social Security- the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS, for its acronym in Spanish) ratified that the right to retirement is at 60 years of age for women and at 65 for men.

With this, it clarified what is stipulated in the aforementioned legal norm in the face of doubts, erroneous interpretations or false news that have circulated on social networks.

But also fair and logical concerns of pensioners and retirees have proliferated in these years in which, with their low incomes, the most vulnerable find it difficult to face inflation, high and abusive prices, and the increase in the cost of living.

It is now a partial increase because for the moment a comprehensive reform cannot be assumed, given that we do not have the financial resources, explained Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister, when announcing the decision at the recent Fifth Ordinary Period of the National Assembly of People's Power.

We have started with those who are in greater situations of vulnerability. The continuity of pensions will continue to be gradual, as the economic situation allows, assured the head of government.

Its implementation demands an increase of 22 billion pesos annually in the expenditure of the Social Security Budget, a significant amount if we take into account the adverse conditions in which the Cuban economy is developing today.

That is why it becomes an expression of political will to attend to those most in need, and also to recognize as it deserves those who reach retirement age after several decades creating wealth or offering services for the benefit of the people and society.

Through legal norms such as Law 105 on Social Security, the State guarantees adequate protection to the worker, his family and the population, and endorses the constitutional principles that women and men enjoy equal rights, duties and guarantees, and the same opportunities and possibilities.

From his account on X, Manuel Marrero Cruz wrote: "We are satisfied with the reception that the decision to increase pensions has had in the people. We know that there are some doubts about those who receive less than 1528 pesos, which are included in this benefit, and their pension will be increased by one thousand 528 pesos.

"In the coming days, the Minister of Finance and Prices, Vladimir Regueiro, will make an appearance to report on the details of the measure, its scope and how it will be implemented from September", the Prime Minister stressed. (Text and photo: ACN)
