Havana, August 5.- The Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) conducted the Third National Exercise to Prevent and Combat Drugs and Marijuana Planting on agricultural and forestry lands, according to the MINAG website.
The activity took place from June 23rd to 28th in all provinces, with emphasis on territories from Camagüey to Guantánamo.
During the exercise, 5,758 producers and 341 vulnerable areas in remote and difficult-to-access zones were inspected. In the province of Santiago de Cuba, one crop was detected, with 3,426 plants and 3,401 seeds seized in the town of La Pimienta, Tercer Frente municipality.
The Ministry of Agriculture, together with the Ministry of the Interior, the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP, for its acronym in Spanish), the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, and the Federation of Cuban Women, conducted 692 talks and training activities for cooperative members and landowners. ANAP structures worked with municipal agricultural delegations on these initiatives.
Among the deficiencies detected were excessive weed growth and poor practices in production areas, which foster illicit crops. Noncompliance with inspection plans was also identified on land managed by agricultural and forestry companies.
Competent authorities are working to enforce Decree Law 232 against the person responsible for the crop detected in Santiago de Cuba. The exercise is part of the country's Zero Tolerance policy on drugs. (Source: ACN)
