Fidel, a pioneer in climate change, says Argentine political scientist

Buenos Aires, August 15.- The historic Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, was a visionary ahead of his time and warned about what the world is experiencing today with climate change, reflects Argentine intellectual and political scientist Atilio Borón.

In an extensive article on the Cuban revolutionary's legacy on the occasion of his 99th birthday, Borón recommends listening to Fidel's premonitory speech at the First Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, June 1992.

“What everyone is saying today, even fourth-rate politicians perched in government for who knows what obscure reasons, Fidel said in just over five minutes in his speech before the plenary session of that Summit”, he notes.

And he adds: “There he predicted that the human species was in danger from environmental destruction, anticipated the catastrophic nature of the climate change we are experiencing today, and the consequences of the depredations that developed capitalism was carrying out with total irresponsibility, plunging the countries of the Global South into misery”.

The political analyst recalls that many in the audience listened to him with an air of mocking condescension: “Fidel again with his apocalyptic sermons! Who were those arrogant little figures that history mercilessly buried?”, he asks.

He lists: George Bush Sr., Fernando Collor de Mello, Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Carlos Saúl Menem, Felipe González (who became a lobbyist for Spanish companies), Jaime Paz Zamora, Patricio Aylwin, among others.

“Who remembers these tiny figures today? Few, and when they do, it's to curse them. Instead, Fidel spoke, and his words were engraved in stone”, he states.

“Today, when we are on the brink of an irreparable ecological catastrophe, his words of warning resonate ever more strongly”, he emphasizes.

In his reflection, Atilio Borón calls for a “proper celebration” of the centenary of Fidel's birth. (Source: Prensa Latina)
