Donald Trump, United States, Europe, War, Meeting, Russia, Ukraine, European Union, Volodymyr Zelensky

Trump began meeting with Zelensky and assured that he will call Putin after the meeting

USA, 19 August - U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will call his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, following discussions on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders who are accompanying the Ukrainian leader in Washington.

“I just spoke with President Putin indirectly, and we’re going to have a phone conversation right after today’s meetings,” he told the media, adding that the Russian leader is “waiting” for his call.

“If all goes well, we will hold a trilateral meeting,” he announced.

Donald Trump pointed out that the war has been ongoing for almost four years and that the past week has been particularly bloody, with many soldiers killed on both sides. He stated that he, Zelensky, and Putin all want to bring the conflict to an end.

For his part, the Ukrainian president declared that he is willing to hold elections in Ukraine, but not while hostilities continue.

Zelensky arrived in the U.S. to discuss the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict after the historic summit held last Friday between the Russian and U.S. presidents at Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base in Alaska. Both Putin and Trump emphasized that the talks took place in a “constructive and mutually respectful” atmosphere. (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
