Camagüey Interpretation Center: Where the city comes alive (+ Photos)

Camagüey, September 9. - In the city of Camagüey, a World Heritage Site, the Interpretation Center stands as the modern guardian of its legacy. Far from being a conventional museum, this center fulfills a crucial educational function, translating the historical, urban, and social complexity of the city into profound narratives that connect past and present.

It is located at 160 A Martí Street, between Cisneros and Independencia streets, a short distance from the iconic Ignacio Agramonte Park.

Mónica Córdoba Azan, the institution's principal specialist, emphasizes that the entity unites cultural outreach with conservation practice. Its vision is to ensure that the development of the city coexists in harmony with the preservation of its invaluable tangible heritage, fostering active learning among visitors and the community.

Yuleydi Hernández Porto, a specialist at the Interpretation Center, explained that the center's star piece is a scale model of part of the city of Camagüey. This detailed model offers a unique panoramic view: the labyrinthine layout, a legacy of colonial urban adaptations to defend against corsairs and pirates, is revealed in all its logic and uniqueness.

The model not only indicates the location of plazas, churches, and stately homes, but also allows one to visualize the spatial relationship between these elements, making tangible the civic evolution of Camagüey over more than five centuries. This resource is complemented by educational tools and guides that facilitate interpretation of the city for visitors of all ages.

Beyond its educational function, the Interpretation Center serves as a space for dialogue with the community. It is a meeting point for exchanges between different sectors of society, including schoolchildren, families, and older adults, who participate in informational programs and debates on the preservation and dissemination of heritage.

The experience at the Interpretation Center goes beyond observation: it invites us to question how the city has been built and transformed, and what roles citizens can play in its future trajectory. Through exhibitions, workshops, and guided tours, the site positions itself as a living instrument for understanding, appreciating, and protecting Camagüey's heritage.
