Camagüey, Sep 9. - With diverse criteria and enriching debates, workers from the Azutecnia Specialized Workshops Base Business Unit (UEB, for its acronym in Spanish) of the Sugar Workers' Union in Camagüey held today the pilot consultation assembly for the Draft Law of the Labor Code, which began nationwide.

During the meeting, which was attended by union leaders and secretaries of the workers' organization in the province, Yosvany Chávez Lima, member of the Provincial Bureau of the Cuban Workers' Union (CTC, for its acronym in Spanish) and secretary of the sugar workers' sector, emphasized issues related to equal opportunities in the workplace, wages, training and advancement, social security protection, and respect for collective principles and rights.

He emphasized that the aspects regulated by the bill not only include workers, but also the entire family, promoting work as a fundamental value of society, an essential process for materializing the enjoyment of rights and guarantees of individuals.

Diverse opinions were at the heart of the debates, including access to a decent wage in the public sector, the deadline for preparing employment records, and unpaid leave for workers.

In his intervention, Humberto Molina, director of the Azutecnia UEB, stated that with regard to a decent wage, must be reviewed those that are currently minimum by the nomenclature, considering that in the private sector they better meet expectations.

On the other hand, Naya de Machado Pérez mentioned that in the case of the deadline to prepare a worker's labor file, which is 15 days counted from the formalization of the employment relationship, she considers this period is too short and proposes to extend this term until the probation period ends.

Other interventions addressed unpaid leave (without pay), which should take into account workers with parents who require special care, and training as a fundamental role in each work group. (Text and photos: Gleibis Gómez Durvas/Radio Cadena Agramonte)
