Havana, September 10. -Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized this Monday at her morning press conference the importance of Cuban medical collaboration for her country, highlighting in particular the effectiveness of a unique drug from the laboratories of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology: the island's Heberprot-P®.
In response to a journalist's question, the president responded that there is collaboration with Cuba on several issues, but particularly with the hiring of doctors and cooperation in drug production.
In the latter case, he explained, there is a very special one that is used to cure diabetic foot. She revealed that there are already clinics in Mexico that have the drug, as well as some Salud Bienestar centers. She emphasized that it is very important, as it is the only country in the world that produces it.

She added that Cuba is one of the few countries willing to send doctors to Mexico, and noted that the nation had stopped graduating specialists for too many years. She showed a graph that demonstrates this. She explained that the shortage of medical specialties was very large for this reason, as general practitioners were trained and found it difficult to continue with a specialty afterward.
Previous governments did not support public health. From 2008 to 2018, there was a very large decline in the graduation of doctors and an even greater decline in specialists. In contrast, from 2018 with the arrival of Andrés Manuel López Obrador until 2025, the graduations of general practitioners and specialists multiplied several times.
Specialist Shortage
Even so, the deficit was so large that doctors had to be hired from abroad, and the country that most supported Mexico was Cuba, which has highly capable professionals in all specialties. That is why, she said, they are hired.
"The opposition can say what it wants, but it has to admit that they are very good doctors who are helping in the most remote places, where there are no Mexican health professionals who don't dare to go, for example, in the mountains of Guerrero and many other places," she stated.
When there are enough Mexican specialist doctors, hiring foreigners will stop, but many are still lacking. That is why remedial programs are implemented with tours so that they rotate through hospitals and health centers at least three days a week to help cover the deficit.
Effectiveness of Heberprot-P®
She emphasized the importance of using Heberprot-P® in the country, a medication containing recombinant human epidermal growth factor for the effective healing of diabetic foot ulcers. It is the only therapy in the world for the effective healing of deep, complex neuropathic and ischemic ulcers.
According to Cuban specialists, Heberprot-P® is injected into diabetic foot ulcers to stimulate and accelerate progressive and sustained healing and reduce the risk of lower limb amputation. It is an injectable formulation designed to address an unmet medical need, with extraordinary results recognized by the scientific community.
