Havana, September 19. -Founded in 2005, 20 years later, it is still fighting fierce battles for life. It was founded by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz as a gesture of solidarity after Hurricane Katrina devastated the southern states of the United States, an action rejected by the US government.
The Henry Reeve International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics honors a young American who joined the Cuban patriots as a soldier during the war of independence against Spanish colonialism.
As nature would have it, the medical brigades that comprise it faced their first challenge in 2005, when heavy rains caused flash floods in Guatemala. There, the Henry Reeve assisted nearly half a million people.
Humanism and Solidarity
Since its founding on September 19, 2005, the Henry Reeve Contingent has preached the highest standards of humanism and solidarity. The residents of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, know this because Cuban doctors arrived there 20 years ago when a devastating earthquake devastated that nation.
The Henry Reeve Contingent also fought important battles for life by significantly contributing to eradicating the cholera epidemics in Haiti and Ebola in Africa.
Its most recent dose of love for humanity was delivered during the Covid-19 pandemic, a meritorious effort that led to its nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.
