Camagüey, Sept. 24 – It is almost imminent that Yordanis Samón Matamoros, originally from Bayamo but become a Camagüey native, will play today against Mayabeque in this city, reaching one of the most significant milestones in Cuban baseball: joining the “2,500 hits club” in the Cuban National Series.
As previously announced, the strong hitter was preparing to set this precedent in his sporting career on Camagüey’s soil, where he “landed” exactly five years ago under the guidance of former coach Miguel Borroto.
Now in his 23rd season, the player began the season with 2,471 hits, and until the closing of yesterday's day he marked another 28 hits, so it is a matter of little time to become the third player who embraces that milestone in Cuba.
The leader in this category is Frederich Cepeda from Sancti Spíritus, who has accumulated 2,543 hits, including the six he has recorded in this tournament, followed by the retired player from Las Tunas, Danel Castro (2,502), whom Samón is expected to surpass during this same championship.
His debut in the Cuban classics was in the 2002–2003 season wearing the uniform of his native province, Granma, and at that time, he finished with 112 hits, combining his performances in the regular season, postseason, and the Second Super League.
He debuted on December 17, 2002 against Villa Clara, and that day he hit 3-0, a game that won the Villa Clara team 6-1, and held at the Mártires de Barbados stadium, in Bayamo, the capital of Granma.
But the next day the retaliation came, and appeared with the first undisputed in his career. At that time, he played right field, and occupied the sixth shift in the alignment of Granma.
By the way, his 2,000th hit was achieved on October 18, 2020, in his first at-bat against Ciego de Ávila’s native Yairon Martínez Lorenzo. It was somewhat of a self-gift since that date was also his 39th birthday.
Currently, this valuable athlete is 43 years old. (Text: Gilberto Rodríguez Rivero/Contributor to Radio Cadena Agramonte) (Photo: Archive)
