Camagüey, September 25. -The early warning system is being strengthened during the current rainy season, stated Lieutenant Colonel Félix Villegas Varona, head of the Civil Defense Department in the province of Camagüey.
With the purpose of protecting the population and the economy's resources, he highlighted that there is cohesive work among civil defense, the Camagüey Provincial Meteorological Center, and the Provincial Delegation of Hydraulic Resources to continuously monitor the hydrometeorological situation and contribute to decision-making.
He explained that Camagüey has rain gauges, several of them digital, a 24-hour weather radar, and seven automatic weather stations that provide accurate and reliable information to the population.
Regarding the 95 millimeters of rain recorded in practically two and a half hours during the most recent locally intense rain that affected the city of Camagüey, Beatriz Martínez Pérez, director of the Provincial Meteorological Center, urged the population to follow the profiles on Facebook (Camagüey Meteorological Center), the Telegram channel (The Weather in Camagüey), and the weather reports issued on radio and television in order to avoid false alarms.
She mentioned that the occurrence of precipitation on the afternoon of this Tuesday, in the interior and south of the provincial capital, combined with social factors such as the poor condition of some drains, caused the water level in some low-lying areas of the city to rise due to a flash flood, but that it eased after a short time.
For the coming days, she said, the probability of rain will continue due to the passage of some tropical waves. Therefore, she insisted that the population should trust that, in the event of any risky situation, the necessary measures will be taken. (Text and photo: Yadira Núñez Figueredo/ACN)
