Camagüey, health, seniors' homes, elderly

Camagüey grandparents receive comprehensive support for their physical and emotional well-being

Camagüey, Oct. 1 -A concern for the Cuban government is that the number of people over 60 is increasing each year, which can be a challenge if appropriate social policies are not implemented. Faced with this situation, Cuba has joined the World Health Organization's call to commit to the Decade of Healthy Aging (2021-2030), continuing the work undertaken since the triumph of the Revolution to guarantee health and social assistance for the elderly.

The National Program for Comprehensive Care for Older Adults was established on the island in 1996, with the goal of providing quality health care tailored to the needs of this age group and achieving healthy aging.

In the municipality of Camagüey, there are five seniors' homes, located near the Este, Previsora, Julio Antonio Mella, Ignacio Agramonte, and Joaquín de Agüero polyclinics, ready to accommodate seniors during the daytime.

The territory also has the Manuel Ramón Silva Nursing Home, a center with capacity for 263 residents and another 100 during the day.

The seniors' homes aim to improve the health and mood of older adults. They offer excursions, cultural activities, and daily physical exercises.

The Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER), together with the cultural sector, also promote recreational activities to develop the skills acquired in the seniors' homes.

In an effort to meet their basic needs, the Basic Business Unit for Commerce and Gastronomy created community soup kitchens for those without sufficient income to cover their food.

Although social security, along with bank branches, are adopting alternatives to facilitate access to pension and retirement payments, such as allowing specific days for each year of birth to reduce long lines and make it easier for seniors to cash their retirement payments, difficulties persist, such as large crowds from early in the morning waiting for their turn to receive their payment.

Amid the complex situation our country is experiencing, we continue to look for options to provide quality care to seniors. (Roger Ariel Díaz Sánchez/Radio Cadena Agramonte) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
