Havana, Oct. 3 – The Cuban men's and women's teams participating in the Lima 2025 Youth World Judo Championships will depart today for Peru, the venue for the event on Oct. 5-7.
Andrés Taño González, national commissioner, reiterated to the Cuban News Agency (ACN, for its acronym in Spanish) that eight judokas have been selected, led by Dayanara Curbelo, in the over 78 kilogram (kg) category, and Lisrialis González (78 kg), gold and bronze medalists at the 2nd Junior Pan American Games in Asunción 2025, Paraguay, in that order.
According to the International Federation's website www.ijf.org, the world championship in the Peruvian capital will feature 487 athletes—254 men and 233 women—from 68 countries.
Taño reminded ACN that Naysdel Cardoso (90 kg), currently absent and a silver medalist, was also present in the Paraguayan capital, and that Lisrialis contributed Cuba's first gold medal in the multi-sport competition.
The Cuban federation official added that the silver medal was also achieved in the Paraguayan capital in the mixed teams tournament, completing the overall tally of one gold, two silver, and one bronze.
He highlighted that the main goal of the Cuban delegation is to ensure competitive preparation for the new generation for the upcoming Olympic cycle.
Along with the eight judokas, coaches Boannys Chan and Rafael Rubio will travel, supported by physiotherapist Lesvia María Jiménez, he added.
He announced that after the World Cup, they will be in action in the Grand Prix, from the 11th to the 13th, and in the Open, scheduled for the 14th, both also in Lima, from where they will return to Cuba on the 15th. (Text and Photo: Cubasí)
