Havana, Oct 7th - The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cuba, Lee Ho-Yul, today reaffirmed his country's willingness to deepen bilateral collaboration with Cuba in multiple areas.
During an event held in this capital, for the National Day of Korea, which coincided with the traditional Chuseok festival, the diplomat thanked the Cuban authorities, the diplomatic corps and the Korean community on the island for their support in these initial months.
"I wish our countries an eternal, prosperous and mutually beneficial friendship, to build together a bright future not only for our nations, but for humanity in general," said the ambassador, who stressed: "this is just the beginning."
As a concrete example of cooperation, he announced a donation of rice aimed at strengthening food security in Cuba, managed together with the World Food Programme (WFP).
He detailed that the Asian nation also collaborates with the United Nations Children's Fund in maternal and child nutrition programs and with the World Health Organization in sending medical supplies to Cuba.
Lee Ho-Yul explained that since 2020, the Korea International Cooperation Agency together with the WFP has been promoting projects in eastern Cuba to strengthen food supply systems and it was recently agreed to extend this initiative for five more years.
He specified that training is being developed in transportation, biopharmacy and civil engineering and the exchange of knowledge in environmental management is being promoted, especially in the fight against plastic pollution.
The ambassador announced that, in the coming months, both nations will work on the Inter-Ministerial Political Consultation Mechanism, the negotiation of an agreement on investments and the possible creation of a joint economic commission.
Likewise, cultural cooperation is being promoted through a memorandum of understanding between the National Library of the Republic of Korea and the José Martí National Library, as well as the formalization of the teaching of the Korean language in Cuba.
"The Cuban people have immense potential. We trust that, like Korea after the war, it will overcome its challenges and build a future of prosperity," he expressed.
During the event, a tribute was also paid to the descendants of Koreans in Cuba, whose presence symbolizes decades of human ties between both nations. (Text and photo: PL)
