Upcoming events for Cuban War Correspondent's Day


Havana, Oct. 10 – Cuban War Correspondent's Day will be celebrated for the first time in Cuba with a program of action dedicated to journalist Juan Candelario Bacallao, who died in combat in the People's Republic of Angola (RPA, for its acronym in Spanish) four decades ago this year, it was announced in this capital.

Directors of the War Correspondents' Circle of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) reported that the commemoration will take place from Tuesday the 14th to Sunday the 19th, according to national media reports.

Milton Díaz Canter, president of the group, emphasized the importance of the event to preserve national history and the work of the Cuban Revolution in terms of internationalism. While Miguel Fernández Martínez, its vice president, defined Bacallao as a martyr of Cuban radio and television, who died on October 19, 1985, during an ambush at the RPA, while serving as a reporter.

The plan includes a meeting with journalism students of the Faculty of Communication, with journalists who after their recent graduation in 1980 performed similar tasks in the RPA and Ethiopia, an act of remembrance to the prominent correspondent Eduardo Yasells (1935-2025), and the opening of a photographic exhibition at the Casa de la Prensa in Havana, about his work on various war scenes around the world.

Also included is the reopening of the historical site in memory of Bacallao at Radio Reloj radio station; and a pilgrimage in the Colón Cemetery, where his remains rest in the Veterans Pantheon, where a wreath will be placed. (Text and photo: ACN)
