Santa Cruz del Sur, Camagüey, Oct. 20th - To achieve effective agri-food development in the Basic Cooperative Production Units (UBPC, for its acronym in Spanish), the Credit and Service Cooperatives (CCS, for its acronym in Spanish), and the productive poles, not only are adequate resources and machinery required. Constant work in the field is essential to guarantee the food supply for the people.
The President of the Republic, Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, has emphasized on several occasions the need to incorporate science, technology, and innovation in the planting of crops in all regions of the island.
Despite the efforts, in Santa Cruz del Sur it has not been possible to comply with what was agreed upon by the productive bases regarding the delivery of root vegetables, grains, vegetables, as well as milk and beef to the industry. To date, nearly 90 tons of meat and more than 695 thousand liters of milk have not yet been delivered, despite the systematic controls implemented.
The authorities of the Municipal Delegation of Agriculture and other government officials have made calls for attention, but these have not been sufficient. Although there have been delays in payments to producers, which have been progressively resolved, it is unacceptable that upon receiving the money, many of them allocate products such as root vegetables, milk, cheese, and yogurt to the informal market. This implies that the offenders must face legal consequences without delay.
Since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959, which sought the well-being of the humble, the Moncada Program proposed by Fidel Castro was initiated, which included the elimination of large estates and the delivery of land to the peasants, the true owners of agricultural production. This process must continue, as the advances achieved are permanent.
To increase food production, it is also crucial to promote the breeding of sheep and goats, pigs, and poultry, as well as the processing of fruits such as mango, guava, papaya, and tomato from mini-industries. These alternatives will contribute to strengthening the basic food basket of the people. It is time to act with critical thinking, decisive action, scientific support, and awareness of the importance of this task. (Raúl Reyes Rodríguez/Radio Santa Cruz)(Photo: Taken from the Internet)
