Camagüey, Oct 21. - With the aim of fostering the habit of reading and promoting the work of local writers, the Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda Literary Promotion Center was officially inaugurated. It belongs to the Enrique José Varona Provincial Book and Literature Center.

The opening ceremony was attended by Walter Simón Noris, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province, along with other government authorities, cultural institutions, writers, and young creators.

Jildo Borrel Cáceres, director of the Provincial Book and Literature Center, explained during the event that this new institution is conceived as "an ideal space for cultural exchange, literary promotion, and the enjoyment of Cuban art in all its manifestations."

He detailed that, in its first stage, the center has bookstores and a Literary Café intended for book presentations, gatherings, and cultural events. "In a second phase," he added, "offices will be incorporated to perfect and unify the work of the provincial book system."

As part of the inaugural day, the documentary "Niurkis Pérez, el oficio de soñar" (Niurkis Pérez, The Craft of Dreaming) was presented. It is a production by Lucem Agency based on an original idea by filmmaker Marianne Portuondo Méndez. The work offers an intimate look at the career of children's literature writer Niurkis Pérez, author of the renowned series "Cuentos Patatos," one of the most narrated series in Latin America.

Niurkis Pérez herself expressed her gratitude for the tribute and reiterated her commitment to continue working for art and literature, especially through her project Buya, promoted with the support of the Cartón Creativo Project, the City Historian's Office, and the Uneac.

Kenny Ortigas Guerrero, provincial director of Culture, acknowledged the collective effort to materialize this space, which he defined as "a spiritual anchor for the Camagüey’s community." In his remarks, he stressed that "culture is the first thing that must be saved; that culture which is born from within our communities, which multiplies and elevates the soul of the people."

With this inauguration, Camagüey strengthens its institutional cultural system and reaffirms its commitment to defending identity values, stimulating literary creation, and promoting the book as an essential asset for the spiritual development of society.
