On October 22, eighty years were commemorated since the death in Havana of José Francisco Martí Zayas Bazán, son of the most universal of Cubans, José Martí. Over the years, his figure has been subject to various interpretations, some critical, but the renowned historian Eusebio Leal valued his merits and his role as a patriotic act.

José Francisco was born in Havana on November 22, 1878. His childhood and adolescence took place on Luaces Street, current number 109, near República, and in the surroundings of San Pablo, close to the Renato Guitart school.

From a very young age, he maintained a close relationship with his father, marked by unforgettable moments that left a mark on family history. One of these moments was the last letter that José Martí addressed to him on April 10, 1895, in which he expressed his affection and concern:

"Son: Tonight I leave for Cuba: I leave without you, when you should be by my side. As I leave, I think of you. If I disappear on the way, you will receive with this letter the watch chain that your father wore in life. Goodbye. Be just. Your Martí."
