Surveillance maintained at Najasa 2 reservoir in Camagüey

Camagüey, Oct. 25th - The Najasa 2 dam, located in the municipality of Santa Cruz del Sur, in the province of Camagüey, is operated efficiently and safely to protect the population residing downstream of it, and in accordance with the current climatological situation and the proximity of Tropical Storm Melissa to the country.

This was stated by Gustavo Riesco López, general director of the Hydraulic Use Company in the territory, who specified that at this time it is relieving at 50 cubic meters per second, which represents about 4.3 million cubic meters of water in 24 hours.

That management, he clarified, is carried out in a coordinated manner, since the aforementioned reservoir constitutes a guarantee of supply both for the population and for agriculture.

The director explained that for its proper operation, the time of year, the level and degree of saturation of the reservoir, which has more than 800 square kilometers, as well as the complementary basin of the other dams when they are relieving, are taken into account.

It is an essential priority, he asserted, the protection of the population, so in the strict management of the dam, it is also essential that the water level does not exceed the gates or the curtain.

The rains associated with Tropical Storm Melissa, he commented, could favor the basin of that coastal municipality, because the hydrogeological sectors located in Cándido González and Haiti have a high degree of salinization. (Text and photo: Yadira Núñez Figueredo/ACN)
