In Vertientes, protection reinforced against Hurricane Melissa in Sierra Maestra


Camagüey, October 28. - The Evaluation Commission of the Defense Council in the southern municipality of Vertientes proceeded to protect residents of the Sierra Maestra community, one of the flood- and isolation-prone areas in that demarcation, ahead of possible impacts from Hurricane Melissa.

A total of 800 people were transported via enabled vehicles to the Cruce de la Trocha center, including 140 elderly individuals, nine of whom are bedridden, as reported on the website of Radio Vertientes.

Meanwhile, in El Chorro and Calabazar communities, they are also ensuring the safeguarding of the population in secure locations, such as the grandparents from the Noel Fernández Pérez Home, who are placed in hospitalization wards, while the women are at Angelina Pérez García primary school.

Marisé Morell Áreas, municipal coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution and in charge of the actions, explained to the press outlet that members of the local Red Cross, the Revolutionary National Police, radio amateurs, and leaders of political and mass organizations are also participating in the evacuation tasks.

She commented that the most important thing in the current situation is to be aware of the existing risks from the threat of Hurricane Melissa to national territory, hence the fundamental purpose of the efforts underway to save human lives.

In the most recent meeting of the Municipal Defense Council (CDM, for its acronym in Spanish) in Vertientes, information was provided on securing beds for pregnant women and pediatric-age population, as well as the basic equipment that will attend to hard-to-reach areas of the municipality.

Regarding the situation of the reservoirs, they have conditions to absorb large volumes of water, considered Arturo Moreno Sánchez, director of the Southern Territorial Business Unit of Hydraulic Resources.

The sector's infrastructure is in good condition, he said, posing no danger, and La Esperanza micro-dam was evaluated, which has population downstream, adds the aforementioned digital publication.

In that context, the immediate opening of the valve was indicated, and an automatic spillway is functioning to prevent any eventuality in the area.
