Madrid, November 3 - The State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC, for its acronym in Spanish) has launched a fundraising campaign for the Caribbean island to provide aid following Hurricane Melissa.
According to the MESC, which published a call today on the Cubainformación website, the disasters caused by the cyclone in Cuba's eastern provinces require supportive backing from Spain.
To that end, it explained, several accounts have been opened, all with the same objective of supporting humanitarian action, "for a people who also suffer from the genocidal policy of economic blockade by the United States Government."
So far, donations can be made through accounts in Valencia, Madrid, Málaga, Andalusia, Catalonia, Euskadi (Basque Country), and Granada.
In a similar effort, Medicuba España and SODePAZ have launched a campaign to collect donations for Cuba. As an initial step, the two organizations have already prepared a container with galvanized roofing sheets, which will arrive in Santiago de Cuba on November 6.
Furthermore, they are finalizing the shipment of four additional containers in November with aid to mitigate the damage caused by the devastating Hurricane Melissa on the largest island of the Antilles.
This aid includes sanitary and educational supplies, work clothes, construction materials, photovoltaic equipment, 40 hospital beds (donated by Sierrallana and Laredo Hospital), 2.4 million syringes with needles, and two million hypodermic needles, with a total value of half a million euros.
According to the sources, the first container, carrying 2.4 million syringes with needles and 110,000 hypodermic needles, departed from the port of Valencia last Saturday, November 1. (Text and photo: PL)
