Customs detects drug trafficking attempt at José Martí International Airport

Havana, Nov. 27 – Cuba's Customs Office reported from its Facebook profile on the detection of two international drug trafficking operations at the José Martí International Airport, where two kilograms of methamphetamine hidden inside six baseball bats were seized, according to statements by Wiliam Pérez González, First Vice-Chief of the General Customs of the Republic.

The official specified that four passengers were involved in the incidents, a result of joint work with the Specialized Anti-Drug Enforcement Body, as part of the national campaign "Against Drugs, We Win".

Simultaneously, the Havana Port Customs held a preventive event with the Republic's General Prosecutor's Office and representatives of the Anti-Drug Body, presided over by Pérez González and Colonel Héctor González Hernández, second chief of that institution.

During the meeting, the work of officers outstanding in the detection of illicit activities was recognized, and the complexities of confronting drug trafficking, as well as the current criminal-legal policy in the country, were updated.

Pérez González emphasized the need to consolidate the training of border forces and maintain a high level of risk awareness, with customs youth playing a leading role in the mission of safeguarding the people.

González Hernández highlighted the satisfaction of sharing with those who dedicate their efforts to protecting society from the negative effects of drugs, reaffirming the institutional commitment to the zero-tolerance policy.

These actions add to those carried out at the José Martí International Airport Customs, the Commercial Control Customs, and the National Customs Training School, as part of the national prevention and confrontation strategy.

The zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking is a central axis of Cuban border security and is reinforced through coordination between legal and operational institutions. (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
