Civil Defense celebrates International Volunteer Day

Havana, December 5 - Cuba's Civil Defense commemorated International Volunteer Day today, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1985, recognizing the dedication of those who support communities and strengthen social resilience.

In its social media message, the institution emphasized that volunteering makes individuals part of the solutions, allowing communities to be protagonists of their own development and demonstrating that solidarity transforms realities.

In Cuba, the date takes on special significance due to the role of the Cuban Red Cross, whose volunteers form the basis of the organization and guarantee its active presence throughout the country, under its institutional principles.

The Cuban Red Cross emphasizes that the strength of its members lies in the selfless dedication of thousands of people who contribute to protecting lives and strengthening community preparedness for natural disasters and health emergencies.

During Hurricane Melissa's passage through eastern Cuba, the active participation of volunteers proved crucial in prevention, rescue, and the distribution of humanitarian aid, in coordination with Civil Defense and international organizations.

Official reports indicated that Red Cross brigades carried out rescue operations in Granma province, where dozens of rescues were reported and hundreds of people were protected thanks to joint efforts with local authorities.

The day is an opportunity to publicly congratulate those who make up the Cuban Red Cross and other volunteer structures, reaffirming that volunteering is the heart of the institution and a fundamental pillar in the defense of humanity and solidarity. (ACN) (Photo: Internet)
