Minag promotes REDD+ program for forest conservation

Havana, December 8 - The Ministry of Agriculture of Cuba (Minag) is developing a program aimed at accessing the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+, for its acronym in Spanish) mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the agency stated on its website.

The initiative has technical assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and funding from the Green Climate Fund, according to a recent FAO statement.

The document highlights the country's commitment to forest conservation and the fight against climate change through the strengthening of the National Forest Monitoring System.

Through REDD+, payments are expected to be secured based on results linked to the increase and conservation of carbon in forests.

The proposal was considered strategic for promoting the sustainable management of forest resources and facilitating evidence-based decisions within the international climate action framework.

For its implementation, the FAO provided the agricultural sector with field measurement and monitoring equipment, such as high-precision GPS, digital cameras, drones, and hypsometers, as well as technologies for remote sensing, geographic information systems, and satellite image analysis.

With these resources, the accuracy of monitoring, early detection of deforestation and degradation is improved, and sustainable management practices that preserve biodiversity and ecosystem services are supported.

The project strengthens local technical capacities and generates employment opportunities in rural areas. (Text and photo: ACN)
