Díaz-Canel highlights Cuba's inclusion in Regional Cultural Project

Havana, December 18. - President Miguel Díaz-Canel described the gesture of the Mexican Government to include Cuba in the "25 for 25" educational and cultural project as generous and necessary, according to local press reports today.

Promoted by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, "25 for 25" involves the free distribution of 2.5 million books to young people aged 15 to 30 from 14 Latin American countries to promote reading.

After participating in its presentation in the capital, Díaz-Canel stated via a message on X that this program is a beautiful initiative from the beloved President Claudia Sheinbaum.

For the head of state, it is a bridge of paper and ink that unites the youth of Our America: more than 2 million free books for them!

This Wednesday, at the National Capitol, the seat of the island's Government, the project was presented to about a thousand young people, according to a report from the Presidency of the Republic.

"Thank you for the generous initiative that will allow thousands of young people and adolescents to freely access fundamental works of universal and Latin American literature," the President expressed at the time.

"The books that Mexico places in the hands of Cuban youth continue that profound and cherished dialogue of so many centuries," he noted, according to the same source.

He also considered that the books distributed as part of the initiative invite readers to view the past and present of Latin America with new eyes.

Reports on the matter, published in digital and print editions of Granma, Juventud Rebelde, and other newspapers, highlight Cuba's contribution to the editorial production of the initiative, along with Colombia, Venezuela, and Argentina.

In addition to these nations, the distribution of the titles has been extended to Chile, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, and Mexico.

"25 for 25," supported by a network of alliances with governments and cultural institutions from different countries, is promoted by the Mexican Government through the Economic Culture Fund.

The project brings together works by renowned Latin American authors, including Gabriel García Márquez, Juan Gelman, Eduardo Galeano, Mario Benedetti, Juan Carlos Onetti, and Miguel Ángel Asturias. (Text and photo: PL)
