Mexico to state position on Venezuela at Security Council

Mexico City, Dec. 23 - President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated today Mexico's position rejecting any intervention in Venezuela and announced that her country will firmly state this position at a meeting of the UN Security Council.

Héctor “Vasconcelos, our ambassador (to the United Nations), will participate. Yesterday I was talking with Roberto Velasco, who is now in charge of Foreign Relations, and he will make his participation very firmly, expressing what Mexico always thinks,” the president asserted.

In a context marked by Washington's military threats against Caracas, the head of the Executive insisted on her nation's foreign policy, governed by principles such as non-intervention in the affairs of states, non-interference, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

"That will always be our position. We have stated it very forcefully, and we will always defend it," she emphasized.

When asked about the announcements made yesterday by US President Donald Trump regarding the construction of a fleet of battleships, Sheinbaum recalled the proposal she made in November 2024 at the G20 Leaders' Summit held in Brazil.

"We made a proposal that we always defend: if one percent of what is dedicated to armaments in the world were dedicated to a program like 'Sowing Life,' then we would have more than six million planters in the world. We will always defend peace," she said.

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, yesterday urged his counterparts from the nations of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the 194 UN member states to join efforts to contain the military and piracy threat from the United States.

From the Yellow House of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chancellor Yván Gil read aloud the letter that narrates the events of recent months involving the extensive US military deployment in the Caribbean.

The northern administration has also carried out hijackings of oil tankers near the coasts of the South American nation. (Source: Prensa Latina)
