Brasilia, Feb 11 - The Cuba Solidarity Movement here held its first organizational meeting to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Fidel Castro, in a context today of renewed threats from the United States against the Caribbean country.
The gathering at the Bancarios Theater brought together members of political parties and social movements, university students, and friends of the island in general.
According to ideas raised at last night's meeting, next March 12, the date chosen for the political-cultural event, the legacy of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution (1926-2016) will be evoked as a defender of peace, just causes in the world, and Latin American unity.
Also, the organizers emphasized that the tribute to Fidel Castro, the most universal of those born in the largest of the Antilles, will be a reaffirmation of principles in the face of current challenges.
The meeting was attended by Idalmis Brooks, counselor of the Cuban embassy in Brazil, who thanked the expressions of support and highlighted the importance of solidarity at a time of intensification of US hostility.
Donald Trump, the American president, signed an executive order last January 29 that declares Cuba a threat to the national security of the United States and intends to impose tariffs on oil suppliers to the Caribbean nation.
For said Movement, the decision of the occupant of the White House confirms the persistence of a policy of economic pressure against a people in solidarity with the world.
Several speakers insisted that the event next month, with an expected attendance of about four hundred people according to Pedro Batista, must denounce the blockade and the unilateral coercive measures of Washington.
For her part, Marcy Inostroza declared to Prensa Latina that the United States government threatens all of humanity; but, she pointed out, Cuba will prevail this time as it has done on many other occasions.
This moment, she reflected, is easier than previous ones, because there is Latin American and international solidarity within all the destructive process that is being attempted to be fostered.
Cuba will triumph, emphasized a convinced Inostroza, who was born in Chile and is a declared defender of the complete freedom of peoples. (Text and photo: PL)
