Mexico City, Dec 25.- The Labor Party (PT, for its acronym in Spanish) emphasized the position of the Government of Mexico regarding its relationship with Cuba and expressed its full support for strengthening strategic cooperation between the two nations.
"The Labor Party expresses its total support for the foreign policy of the Government of Mexico, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, based on solidarity, the free self-determination of peoples, and cooperation for development," stated the political formation.
In a statement, it pointed out that recent collaborative actions in the fields of energy and health with Cuba serve as clear examples of this policy, which it considers fundamental pillars for regional stability and the well-being of both peoples.
It highlighted that the relationship "is governed by legitimate bilateral agreements that generate tangible benefits, recognizing the importance of hydrocarbon support and the technical assistance from CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) in light of crises caused by natural phenomena."
In its view, these actions not only help prevent a greater humanitarian crisis on the island (besieged by an economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States) but also position Mexico as a solidary and stabilizing leader in the region.
It noted that Cuban medical collaboration has been a determining factor in ensuring access to healthcare in the most vulnerable areas of this northern nation, and recalled that specialists from the Caribbean country fill vacancies that have historically gone unaddressed.
The PT reiterated that these actions are carried out in strict adherence to the law and international treaties and rejected any attempts at external interference or criticism that seek to undermine South-South Cooperation agreements.
"Solidarity with the Cuban people is a historical and non-negotiable principle that transcends administrations and reflects our nation's faithful commitment," it emphasized.
Recently, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexico's position regarding Cuba is sovereign and will remain despite differences with the U.S. government, which has maintained a blockade against the island for more than six decades.
"Our position regarding Cuba will be maintained, as it has been since President (Adolfo) López Mateos," she said, pointing out the consistency in relations with the Caribbean nation during previous governments, regardless of political trends.
According to the latest data, the U.S. blockade against the island has caused estimated damages of $7.556 billion between March 2024 and February of this year, an increase of 49 percent compared to the previous period.
Considered the main obstacle to Cuba's development, the blockade alone resulted in losses of nearly $300 million in the health sector over one year, while the impact on the energy sector exceeded $496 million due to restrictions on importing fuels and spare parts. (Text and photo: PL)
