Nuevitas, Camagüey, December 31 - The eve of the New Year is just around the corner, a sacred moment for Cubans where family, music, and the aroma of roasted pig come together.
On December 31, the arrival of a new cycle is celebrated, and to welcome the new year "on the right foot," the children of this Caribbean island maintain rituals and superstitions.
To acquire economic prosperity, it is common to place a bill inside a shoe or step on it at midnight to ensure financial well-being does not lack.
On the other hand, burning a rag doll is a classic in the neighborhoods as it symbolizes leaving behind the sorrows of the old year and being reborn with new hopes.
Meanwhile, throwing a bucket of water into the street at midnight is believed to scare away the bad and clear the way for the new year to arrive filled with joy.
For those who dream of traveling, the practice is to walk around the block with a suitcase in hand and well packed.
Others prefer - either due to Afro-Cuban heritage or simple superstition - to wear a red garment to attract luck. Some women even wear their underwear inside out to ensure success in love.
Amidst music, hugs, and these rituals, Cuba bids farewell to one year and embraces with faith the one to come. (Annelys Acosta Vázquez/Radio Nuevitas) (Photo: Radio Nuevitas)
