National baseball playoff round begins

Camagüey, Jan 20.- The 64th National Baseball Series begins the playoff round this Tuesday, after the eighth team for this stage was finally determined, although heated controversies still resonate regarding the overwhelming winning streak that secured Villa Clara's ticket.

On their path to qualification, the "Orange Leopards" (Villa Clara) dispatched the teams of Las Tunas, Granma, Camagüey, and Ciego de Ávila, stringing together nine consecutive victories—totaling eleven including two previous wins over the Ciego de Ávila "Tigers."

The defeat experienced by the "Bulls" of this province (Camagüey) is still the talk of the town. They entered their final game with a 7-2 lead, only to be walked off in a controversial ninth inning, during which they were forced to use catcher and first baseman Yan Rey Pomares as a pitcher.

The Camagüey team entered those concluding duels with a battered roster that, as the "cherry on top," could only field four pitchers—something unheard of—alongside excuses given by some players for not joining the squad.

In today's action, with the competitive spark starting at 1:30 p.m., Holguín and Artemisa will face off at the Calixto García stadium in the east, while Mayabeque will host the Industriales team at the Nelson Fernández stadium in San José.

For Wednesday the 21st, those same teams will return to the same venues, while the squads from Matanzas and Sancti Spíritus will debut at the same time at the Victoria de Girón stadium in Matanzas. On the 22nd, the matchup between Las Tunas and the visiting Villa Clara team is scheduled.

The top four teams will continue toward the title contention, and the top six will qualify for the Elite League. (Text: Gilberto Rodríguez Rivero/Contributor to Radio Cadena Agramonte) (Photo: www.jit.cu)
