Havana, Jan 20. - The Oral Liquid Medications and Powders Laboratory Company (Medilip, for its acronym in Spanish), located in Granma, is consolidating its growth by expanding its natural product line and incorporating advanced extraction technologies.
This strategy follows a research-driven approach that prioritizes the development of plant-based medicines, seeking to overcome the shortage of imported raw materials through productive linkages.
Among its established products are syrups made from oregano, eucalyptus, lemongrass (caña santa), and aloe vera; vitamin C and propolis melitos (honey-based preparations); as well as shampoos based on aloe, chamomile, and majagua.
The entity has taken a leading role in the production of natural alternatives, such as repellents and cough syrups made from cañandonga and onion, and is now moving toward greater diversification, explained Efrén Vladimir Rodríguez Lora, director of Medilip.
"For this year, we plan to incorporate derivatives of garlic, guava, and mulberry—the latter being the result of joint research with the University of Granma."
He added that, in parallel, technological capacity is being boosted through advanced methods such as steam distillation and turbo-maceration, applied to the study of eight promising species.
The goal is to scientifically validate these extracts to turn them into a new line of natural products that will result in health benefits for the population, he noted.
These products, which will be validated by the medical university, seek not only a social impact but also an economic benefit for the company, closing the cycle between research and the generation of added value.
Recently, within the framework of Cuban Science Day, Medilip was recognized as an outstanding company for its work in the areas of production, development, and innovation, as well as for its management of projects oriented toward the laboratory's advancement. (Text and photo: Granma Digital)
