Cuba, Fidel Castro Ruz, youth, March of the Torches

With Fidel's example, They will reenact the March of the Torches

Havana, Jan 27. - Motivated by the centennial of the birth of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, young people from across the country will take part tonight in the traditional March of the Torches.

Meyvis Estévez Echeverría, First Secretary of the National Committee of the Union of Young Communists (UJC, for its acronym in Spanish), urged participants to attend the occasion fully aware of the reasons that move and make them march, at a time of difficulties and heightened threats, which nevertheless cannot subdue the will of Cubans to resist and overcome.

The youth leader also called for paying tribute from the historic steps of the University of Havana to the 32 Cuban combatants who fell during the aggression perpetrated by United States forces in Venezuela last January 3rd.

Raúl Palmero Fernández, First Secretary of the UJC in Havana, shared that the March will be guided this time under the slogan: "Centennial Anti-Imperialist Torch." These concepts underscore the enduring relevance of the thought of National Hero José Martí and of Fidel, while confirming the march itself as an act of cultural and political resistance in the face of the growing threats from the U.S. administration.

The March of the Torches, in memory of National Hero José Martí, was held for the first time at midnight on January 27, 1953, on the eve of his centennial.

Seventy-three years after that event, another centennial invites to the same gathering, guided by the persistence of those ideals of justice and sovereignty among the new generations of Cubans. (PL) (Photo: Granma Digital)
